Most to least important:

(When I say units I mean individual soldiers/ships/tanks etc.)

-Strategy should be the most important feature, followed by tactics.
-The potential for advanced strategies and tactics must be present. I’m not talking just pincer movement, I mean splitting into squads, setting up decoys, transfering individual soldiers between platoons, and (if each soldier/squad has seperate evolving AI, which would be AMAZING, or even just a randomly selected skill level scale) the ability to figure out who the best soldiers are and form elite groups, or promote them to commanders etc.
-AI
-Many units.
-Squads/Platoons/Brigade/Army
-No base building, or if there is then it should be seperate. The battles should have armies facing off against each other with, at most, a few reinforcements.
-Very basic graphics (I’m talking dots on a black screen basic. Obviously better graphics are OK, but more basic makes the potential individual units in a single battle much greater.)
-The ability to command the army at various levels {full army-one bridage-one platoon-one squad} (so you can either swap between levels of the army as you wish throughout the game or choose a level at the start of each battle/war/skirmish to command, while all other levels are operated by AI.)
-Different types of units (even just 3-4, as long as it isn’t a clear paper-scissors-rock situation. Every type of unit should be effective against every other type of unit if used well.)
-Simulation instead of a game with a plot and end-point. I want it to be more similar to a game of chess than most RTS games these days are.

Open source downloads are what I would prefer, but anything from a cheap purchase on steam, through online flash games, to a small scale project you know someone is working on would be great.

Also, obviously a game exactly as I described is incredilby unlikely, so anything close would be greatly appreciated.
I thought StarCraft would be mentioned :D . Awesome game, but I’m looking for something with actual AI, instead of being forced to control individual units. Also, SC is a 4X game, which I’m trying to avoid. I get the feeling though that I might have to make the game myself if I want something like it…

SPOILER ALERT FOR ENDERS GAME
However, after reading Enders Game a couple of years back, I loved the idea of the wargames he played while training, especially the one that turned out to be actually giving orders to ships on the far side of the galaxy.
//END SPOILER ALERT

And yeah, I thought a game similar to that may have been made sometime. Without the sending people to certain death, of course.

Question by Daniel R: In Chess can king legally cross line of off color bishop?
If a white king is on F1 and a black bishop is on G3 can the king move to E2 legally or is this against official chess rules. If you find it to be illegal please post a reference.
I was taught this rule by my grandfather from a book I no longer posses. I have no problem if it is not a rule I just want to know officially what the rule is one way or the other as it has been a point of contention with a few opponents of mine. I remember hearing it called crossing a line of check or crossing a line of attack.
Also acceptable would be a reference to a game online played by a grandmaster where a king was moved across the line of attack of a bishop as illustrated.
Referenced to FIDE especially appreciated.

Please no one say my chess computer allows it. Chess computers have been known to do such weird things as moving bishops sideways or breaking FIDE castling rules.

if the bishop is on g3, it controls e1, f2, g3, and h4
if the bishop is on g3, it controls b8, c7, d6, e5, f4, g3, and h2
the king can dance around g2, f3, g4, and h3
….99.99% of the time if a chess computer allows it?
….it’s probably legit !!

if there is a ROOK on g3
and the king is on b2? then a3, b3, and c3 is forbidden

this is a chess rule that every chess player learns on day one !!

Question by ?????: Chess question: Online playing levels with huge difference between easy and medium?
I played some chess online against computer yesterday at http://www.chess.com/play/computer.html I played about 7 games one after other at Medium level (~1600) and I could just win 1 , I lost 6. It’s like the computer knew what I was planning all the time and it was too difficult for me to play. It was much difficult as opposed to an average real chess player.

So, I later tried Easy level (~1200) and I won the game. I noticed the computer made some really silly mistakes . So I played another one at this easy level but this time i lost it, but that’s because I made some very silly mistakes , like overlooking the capture of my pieces. So anyway but still it was very easy .

I want to ask why this huge difference between Easy and Medium level??? For me, it’s like I can win games at easy and most probably i will lose most games against medium

Also, if i’m not mistaken is that the rating (the figures i wrote above)? . And what does ~ sign mean? Does that mean the rating is around that, or it is lower than that??? Like easy has ~1200 against it, what it means????

Humans make many small mistakes, which some people can’t even pick up on, but a computer can, and exploits easily. A computer uses binary (0 and 1), so it does not know the difference between a small and a big mistake.

The 1200 to 1600 is about the chess federation. The average score is 1200, while the biggest number, held by a Grandmaster (I forget who) has 2500 points roughly.

Question by Leti: I want to be able to type something and have my computer answer me, how do I do this?
For example, I could type, “want to play?” And the computer would say something like, “What?” And I would type, “Chess?” And a game of chess would come up.

I do not know if that is possible unless you have one of those programs that do that downloaded. If you do then it should tell you how to do it
