Question by Thrice Blessed: Is there an online resource about chess openings, that would let me look up openings by first move…?
… by first move rather than by name. For example, instead of needing to know it is called “Benko’s Opening” I could just enter the first move “g3″ and get a list of openings and variations that start that way? So I could study based on what I need to know, rather than by being expected to already know the name of the opening?

Hope that made sense!

I play chess too but never have studied it much. I bet I’ve played 30,000 games on http://www.pogo.com/. I get caught up in those 1 minute games, however, and that’s bad chess.

Here is something I found for you…may not be quite what you’re looking for but interesting:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer

What may help you is to know how to navigate www.google.com or any other search site better.

If you will put your search in quotes such as “chess openings from E3″ then it will only give you search results that have those exact words in it exactly how you entered it. This will greatly help you to find what you’re looking for when searching. If it doesn’t produce good results then change it up a little.

If you already knew this then forgive me.

Perhaps we can play on pogo sometime. My name there is spiritandtruth_

Question by Al L: Which chess book on the Reti opening do you recommend?
I’ve been playing the Reti for really not that long now, and so far I really like it, but I’d like to extend my grasp of the opening a little more.

So which one?

- “The Dynamic Reti” by Nigel Davies (some very good reviews, however ive looked at it a bit and I don’t really care for some of the lines)
- “Starting Out: The Reti” by Neil McDonald
- “Easy Guide to the Reti Opening” by Angus Dunnington
- “How to Play the Reti” by Eric Schiller
- “Winning with the Reti Opening” by Ken Smith and John Hall
- Any other book on Amazon

What I don’t want is a book that limits my playing choices too much. What I want even less is a book that doesnt explain in detail what is going on. Finally, one thing I would really like would be at least some material on many variations. For example, against 1. Nf3 d5 2. c4 e6, I’ve never been quite sure what to play.

ALSO, I’m not much of a gambiteer (however, I still don’t mind some gambits, such as 1. Nf3 d5 2. c4 d4 3. e3 c5 4. b4, where I’m quite fine with 4…dxe3 5. fxe3 cxb4 6. d4!)

anyway, so if you could please recommend any of them, and say why, that would be great

I haven’t read the books, but the reviews are good and the authors are good.

I believe that you answered your own question by writing that
you don’t want is a book that limits your playing choices too much.

With that stated objective: get each of these fine books and have all the ideas.
Regarding expense: the public library, chess club, or a friend might buy one.

Do you know the name of an old Computer game?

I’m looking for the name of an old computer game. It tool place on a chess board but instead of chess, you sent little toys, like bulldozers or kangaroos with boxing gloves, across and tried to break through your oponents line while he did the same. It is pretty old, but i would appreciate it if anyone could tell me what it is called.
