Memorise popular opening sequences and responses. Go back over the last 15 or so years and look at all the World Championship games.

If she appears to know all the openers then try some really old ones – they all have flaws though. It’s the surprise element, if she’s that good, that may catch her out. I played a guy who was slapping me around every game, seemed to know all the openers and responses. I then tried something called The Steinitz Gambit (hasn’t been used in years) – shocked the hell out of him and I won the next few games. It’s now a 50/50 thing – he’s more wary of me and that’s half the battle….

Question by Fantail Flycatcher: What to say when you loose, in case you really dont care to win?
We play chess, football or computer games most of the time. I know I am not the best but I am fairly skilled in all of them. Actually I never cared for winning, I hate competition, it kills all the fun and spoils the spirit of sports.
My friends are aware of it as I never participate in any match with rival clans, there is no fun/ point in winning to prove you are supreme.
Now when I loose and smile they always laugh on me saying I’m pretending to be cool. Initially I didn’t care but now it doesn’t feel good. How to tell them that I am really unaffected by the outcome. They continuously keep pissing. In a match, whenever I do any mistake their comments come running to my mind and I loose focus and seem to be drifted to 3rd world. It is affecting my games now. I told them directly but they don’t believe.
How to tell them that I really don’t feel bad on loosing????????

Well, for one, stop letting it get to you.

If they think you are faking it and you really aren’t, then as an observer, I only see the truth – you aren’t faking it.

What more do you want? They insist on you caring because THEY care and cannot see it any other way.

Question by Bozz Mozz: Can you explain why the king can sometimes go anywhere one space/direction and sometimes restricted?
I learned the crude rules of chess. If I play against the computer, sometimes I’m limited in where I can go. Why? I thought it was literally one space in any direction unless occupied by one of my own guys.

Also, in one game, how come the king could kill the horse, but not the queen? Can you (in laymen’s terms) explain the king?

Best answer:

Answer by ioerr
Well you’re not allowed to move the king onto a square where he’d be taken in the next move, for one thing.

Question by Alex: Chess,Java & OOP (a few questions, please answer)?
It’s going to look kinda like this – A [class] has-a/is-a [object/class]:
A game has-a board
A board has-a square
A square has-a piece
A rook, knight, queen, pawn, bishop, king is-a piece.

So the game is going to have an array of squares.

So, from here on I have a lot of questions. I already asked a few yesterday here but trying to phrase them better and ask more this time. I wasn’t sure if to use a square class and a piece class or just go with the piece class alone, but I guess having both is more OOP. The thing is I have trouble imagining how to design the classes, what methods they should have and where, etc.

Has-a relationship, means that the class has an object (right?). Therefor the square class should have a Piece object. An array of Squares should hold null or any kind of piece but since the Piece class is abstract, I won’t be able to create a Piece object. How do I do this thing then? How do I design the Square class? Could the square class consist of an array of Piece?

Another issue. How do I code the selection of empty squares and-or selection of pieces on the chess board? I assume it has something to do with an event listener such as MouseListener?
If I click on a piece, it should be ready for a move, how?

…and somehow, if a piece is selected, then when I click on an empty square or an enemy piece it shouldn’t de-select my piece but move/attack, how could I do this?

Another question. How do I do the graphics part? If I have an array of squares, then every second element should be black/white? Also, if the square is a solid black/white square, then how do I add the piece graphics on-top of it?

Last question. The game isn’t going to use any AI to start with, it’s going to be a two-player game but from the same computer. So player One makes a move, and then player Two makes a move, on the same computer. But how do I do the coding part for when it’s the player ones turn and player two’s turn?

Sorry if it’s confusing and a lot of questions but it’s pretty confusing for me too, hope someone has the time to help me with this!
Not going to use dragging, click to select and then click to move.
Why is Game a Collection? I was thinking more along the lines that Game is the manager, it has an instance of the chess board and then I don’t know..
I don’t know much about Collections yet, just arrays.

Answer by deonejuan
There is enough graphics that you you download a chess font. Java can load TrueType fonts .ttf.

You will need 6 White and 6 Black .png graphics if you wanted dragging. The 6 White are the PRNBQK, on a transparent square the size of the black square, furthermore the pieces have a white knockout behind the line drawing of that piece.

Board is a class. Consider it GameManager. All it does is update.

Collection Game is probably HashMap, could be HashSet () but if I played with the code I bet I come up with HashMap.

In a Sprite2D game you want an array or a Collection that you refer to after Update. The GameManager runs down the array tweaking State(s).

Inasfaras WhoseTurn… refer to the folder your JDK1.5_updateXXX /demo /applets /TicTacToe

The above thoughts is Model and View. The Controller — Swing being MVC by design — the Controller is the GUI. There is a MouseListener.

I’m too brain-dead to visualize class Piece fully but it has members Character, String bPos, Vector legalMoves, boolean active.

To insert the logic to make the computer Black…. well, that takes more than 2 weeks just to explain.

Question by samywu: A question for Yahoo!: why is Yahoo! Chess infested with bugs?
Bug # 1: The board sometimes resets randomly, forcing a player to leave and loose the game.
Bug # 2: No sound is played when a user enters or leaves a table resulting in Very long wait times for the guest (until the host realizes someone has entered their room)
Bug # 3: Anyone is able to host a table for an indefinite amount of time, resulting in a clutter of dead tables in the room, in which the host is away from his computer, and even longer wait times for anyone who wants to play.
Bug # 4: The “send to email” function does not work.

Bug # 5: And the reason I am posting this: While playing some guy, the board resets at a random; I leave the room, come back, and to my horror find my 1486 rating reset to 1100!

If you are aware of these problems -perhaps they are not exclusive to Yahoo! Chess, but happen also in other games-, please mark this question as interesting, that it may reach and hopefully be reviewed by Yahoo!
If you agree, Please mark the question Intresting, and do not just respond.
Rather that a question per se, this is more like a manifest, which can only be heard if enough people mark the question.

Can you checkmate with just a bishop and a rook?

Question by : Can you checkmate with just a bishop and a rook?
Ok so I am trying to get better at chess and I am playing this game where I have just a bishop and a rook both on black squares and I really can’t seem to get a checkmate. The computer has 2 pawns and a rook. I don’t know what I am doing wrong… Is there any guidelines that tell you what combinations of pieces you can never get a checkmate with. If so please link me up so I won’t fall into this situation again.

Who do you think is the best chess player ever?

Question by Max: Who do you think is the best chess player ever?
Well, today we have records and computers that tell us who was the best. Im happy and proud to say that we Cubans gave the world the greatest chess player in the world. I will explain why, let me just start by mentioning that the book dummies for chess have Capablanca as the greatest.
Go to wikepedia…look at comparing chess player tru history,,,,1978 Elo System..Capablanca number 1.
Who made the least mistakes acording to analyzed cumputers, was Capablanca.
Who was the only player not to lose a single game in 8 years…Capablanca.
Who lost the least games in chess…check it out…Capablanca lost the least games among champions, when you reply,,,dont give opinions,,,give facts…Capablanca record wich i have seen is much better than Bobby Fisher’s.

Talk about facts and records, not opinions.
Jesse…very funny, I guess you not that brite and have no knowledge of Chess.
Imaka…so..you don,t think he was the best ever,,,,who is the best according to you?
Hi, Toni
I respect your opinion, but your not giving me facts, in order to find out who the best player was, we need to talk about records. I looked once at the record and all chess champions in the world lost more games than capablanca, you might not know this, look it up, Capablanca played the most perfect chess among champions, this is in Wikepedia, look it up, computers analyzed this. The only player not to lose a game in 8 years. The only way you can come out with an answer is to check the records, not opinions. Most of you reply with opinions. Dummies for chess book,,,have Capablanca as the greates player…because he dominated chess like no other player…thanks for your answer..bye
Forgot to say, Kasparov and Karpov lost more games than Capablanca, I looked at the records, does it make sense to say that they are better, when they lost more games? I don,t think so. Look at records, they all can be found here in the internet. Most people say,,the best was Fisher, the best was Lasker, the best was Karpov, but they have no clue about there records and all chess records, thats what counts.
WHOEVER WROTE THE BOOK DUMMIES FOR CHESS, HAS THE PROPER ANSWER TO MY QUESTION, THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD IS THE STRONGEST PLAYER IN HIS PRIME. THAT IS WHY IN THE BOOK HI SAYS CAPABLANCA AS THE GREATEST.

IN CASE YOU GUYS DON,T KNOW, CAPABLANCA PLAYED CHESS FOR 30 YEARS, HE ONLY LOST 34 GAMES. ACORDING TO CHESS RECORDS,,,,LOOK IT UP HERE,, HE LOST THE LEAST GAMES AMONG WORLD CHAMPIONS, ONLY ONE NOT TO LOSE A GAME IN 8 YRS, THIS IS WHY HE WAS THE STRONGEST PLAYER AMONG ALL CHAMPIONS. ABOUT A YEAR AGO I CHECKED THE RECORD AND KARPOV AS WELL AS KARPOV LOST MORE GAMES THAN CAPABLANCA, HOW COME?…IF ACORDING TO SOME OF YOU HE WAS THE GREATEST PLAYER….WHY DID HE LOST MORE GAMES?……..THIS DOESN,T MAKE ANY SENSE….MOST OF YOU HAVE NO KNOLEDGE OF RECORDS, THEY ARE ALL HERE FOR YOU TO SEE,,,BYE NOW
Victor….im trying to be fair and partial.
A few months ago I looked at Bobby Fisher’s record, no comparison with Capablanca…If I recall, Mr. Fisher only won 3 or 4 International Turnaments, Capablanca was like 6. If you think that Mr. Fisher was better than Capablanca, why did he lost more games than Capa.
Why Mr. Fisher didn’t spend 8 years without losing a game like Capablanca.
My friend, now we know who play perfect chess among chess Champions, look it up on Wikepedia, don,t take my word for it…..Computers analyzed all chess Champions in the world and Capablanca was the one who made the least mistakes among all world Champions..
Victor….you giving me your opion, and I respect it, Im not giving you my opionion, these are facts. I imagine the guy who wrote dummies for chess knows more about this game than you and me,,,,he said that Capablanca was the greatest,,,cause he dominated chess like no other champion….and im sure the writer is not cuban like us.
Take care,bye
What the writer who wrote dummies for chess said,,makes a lot of sense. Whoever was the strongest player should be the greatest player in the world, the answer is Jose Raul Capablanca,,,,any single player that any of you mention,,,,lost more games than Capablanca….I looked at it,,,,is all here on the net….Karpov..kasparov..and Robert Fisher…they all lost more games than Capablanca……….
Borris Sparky said that Capablanca was the greatest player ever.
Modesty aside, I guess most of you have no clue about chess records, not that I know much about it, records are facts. If you said that such and such player is better, laid down the facts. I am the only one so far talking about facts. Now that Im thinking about it, if the computer said that Capablanca was the player who made the least mistakes, that means that most likely he will beat any other player, cause they all made more mistakes…..guys…look it up on Wikepedia….they studied all players and declared that Capablanca made the least mistakes………so far I don,t have a good answer…someone who laids down the facts about who should be the greates player of all time..
You are write,,,,Bobby Fisher is among the greatest,,,but you have to look at the player’s record,,not only cause he won at 14,,,,look at the whole picture, how many international tournaments, how many wins and lost games, etc..etc…Im sure most people in Russia, will say one of the K guys,,,and those of you from usa will say Bobby Fisher,,,,,,is just the way it is.
Hi TQX

WHY KASPAROV LOST MORE GAMES THAN CAPABLANCA? WHY DIDN,T HE SPEND 8 YEARS WITHOUT LOSING A SINGLE GAME, WHY DID HE MAKE MORE MISTAKES THAN CAPABLANCA,,,DON,T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT,,IS HERE ON WIKEPEDIA……..IM STILL NOT GETTING SOMEONE WHO TALKS ABOUT RECORDS AND FACTS.
