I am the board 1 player for my school’s chess team and am looking for some chess software which will help me learn some more complicated openings. I would like a program which allows me to play against a computer, and also walks me through a large variety of different openings for both white and black. I would prefer free software, but if it is really good I would pay for it too.

Additionally, if anybody has additional suggestions on how to improve my game (besides reading opening books, they just don’t seem to help me much) please let me know in your answer.

Of course, you cannot cultivate talent only with the help of your labor but if you have a little of it you can surely bone it. Do not forget the age-old maxim that genius is five percents inspiration and ninety-nine percents perspiration. Moreover, hardly any human being is totally devoid of the element of talent. Only when we fail to perspire for making it develop that we lag behind the others who do. This is what we purpose to do with this article.

There are times when in the absence of the right kind of guidance our talents wither. Since they don’t know how to properly irrigate and fertilize this plant of talent, this get withered away. Remember that like any other discipline, chess also needs your unwaivering devotion. The young boys normally don’t know how to utilize their free time, especially those who have the potentials. Follow the guidelines given ahead and become a good chess player.

1. Read Chess-books and Magazines

After playing some games, read the book carefully. Play more games and the read the book. Each time you absorb some points that seemed previously obscure or did not grip you.
The way you improve most is not by playing opponents, but by playing over well-annotated games. Cover one side’s move usually the winner’s) and think out of each move before looking.
If you are eager to improve your play rapidly, write down the moves of all your games, not only the competitive one (in which recording is compulsory). It is best to write them in chess scorebooks, as loose score-sheets are easily lost. Afterwards, play each game and jot down critical comments. This how the grandmaster developed his skill in chess and became proficient in a short time without any coaching. It is surprising how much the game became clearer when you see every position a second time, in the light of what happened first time. You become your own tutor. If, after writing your comments you submit some of your games and your comments to a competent coach or top player for assessment for a suitable fee will improve more rapidly still.

Question by Kermit: Free games, is that too much to ask? I am only interested in really old games at that price.?
Take Chess for example, its like a thousand years old. Lennox and Windows both include it on the Operating software for your computer, so Why is it that when I go to Google and type in Free full version Chess Game download all I get is page upon page of 60 free minutes then buy our stupid thousand year old chess game. Same with other old games like Quake, Doom, ect, ect…….I don’t want to buy a new computer just to get the game package. Does anybody know where there are Truly. free. games like Chess, Spades, Hearts, Hoover…..

Not sure if it will have the exact games you are looking for but try the site bored.com & check out the games there. I’m addicted to a game called Boomshine.. Quite a few magazine sites have free games to play. There are also games offered here on Yahoo.

Initially I thought the Near Chess side would have no chance. However, it ended up initially being closer than I expected, running it on the computer and personally playing it against human opponents. I would likely give a slight edge to the Normal side, but I am not sure. Let’s say we follow all of normal chess rules, except the Near side changes things this way:
1. Near starts its pieces one row closer, but its pawns don’t get initial double move.
2. Near doesn’t castle.
3. Near can En Passant Normal’s pawns, but due to the limited movement of Near’s pawns, Normal can En Passant them.

In Near vs Normal one side (white or black) plays by normal chess rules, and the other by Near Chess rules, with unified rules exception noted.

So, anyone have any answer or speculation to which side has the advantage, or if it is dead even?
One more thing, for the sake of determining which side has an advantage, let’s sa:
Game is won on checkmate, and like in normal chess, pawns can promote to any piece, rather than ones that are captured.
People have expressed concerns about castling regarding Near. Castling is used to mobilize rooks and also get the king out of the line of fire. In Near formation, you can drop the rook and king back to accomplish the same thing. As I see it, the lack of castling is an issue here, but the King is not pinned.

based on what I’ve seen and stuff I believe that near chess has more of an advantage but you have to be careful that you don’t let your opponent get the advantage of you. Other wise

What is your opinion of this I have found. Question by patriotism and politics dont mix: Have i been robbed and badly overcharged for paying 0 to purchase deep rybka 4 chess program?
I read lot of websites saying deep rybka is the strongest chess PC engine. I looked at the price and it was $ 130, which seemed quite heavy. In 2006, i purchased another chess program called “Chess Genius” and still costs only $ 27. It is 4 to 5 times less the price.

Anyhow I made chess genius play with deep rybka 4 on 2 separate computers, with the same time and depth constraints. I used “instant play” option on chess genius which means the engine will make a move in split second. And i used “fixed depth” of 1 on deep rybka 4 so that it too makes move in an instant (in less than a second).

With this, i was expecting deep rybka 4 to crush chess genius simply due to its price. However to my surprise the game ended in a draw after 78 moves. Deep rybka despite being $ 130 failed to overpower $ 27 chess genius at the “instant” move game.

So is deep rybka overpriced? Deep rybka has been defeated by human, but it never played world champion vishy anand or garry kasparov. Chess genius defeated kasparov twice (the first computer engine to ever defeat kasparov) and defeated vishy anand twice too, during the 1990′s.

So why is rybka $ 130, whereas chess genius only $ 27?

rybka is overpriced. i have both too. and when rybka defeats chess genius it is often after around 90 moves or near 100 moves (at the same depth and level). Doesn’t really convinces me for $ 130. Rybka says its ELO rating is 3200, whereas chess genius claims ELO rating of 2800. 2800 ELO = $ 27. 3200 ELO = $ 130. That is ridiculous.

That is 1 cent per ELO rating for chess genius. and about 4 cent per ELO rating for rybka. Sure rybka is stronger, but not by that much.

however at the instant play level chess genius is the toughest. nothing matches it and that’s its biggest strength. chess genius itself claims, “incredibly powerful play at instant move too”.

Question by skywagon2492: Opening applications on my computer doesn’t work normally?
I got webroot for my computer and when i ran a virus scan with webroot it took care of all of my virus problems. After doing this whenever I open an application it asks me specifically how to open the application. Whenever I go into windows explorer and select the application start icon and tell it to go it halfway starts and then it closes out completely. For some reason it hasn’t affected all of my programs; browsers work fine, the windows games (mahjong, chess, minesweeper) requires me to find the start file every time I open it, my virtual disc mounting software won’t work at all (even after I re-downloaded them. I can’t system restore because that was lost with the antivirus scan. I have Windows 7.

Memorise popular opening sequences and responses. Go back over the last 15 or so years and look at all the World Championship games.

If she appears to know all the openers then try some really old ones – they all have flaws though. It’s the surprise element, if she’s that good, that may catch her out. I played a guy who was slapping me around every game, seemed to know all the openers and responses. I then tried something called The Steinitz Gambit (hasn’t been used in years) – shocked the hell out of him and I won the next few games. It’s now a 50/50 thing – he’s more wary of me and that’s half the battle….

We play chess, football or computer games most of the time. I know I am not the best but I am fairly skilled in all of them. Actually I never cared for winning, I hate competition, it kills all the fun and spoils the spirit of sports.
My friends are aware of it as I never participate in any match with rival clans, there is no fun/ point in winning to prove you are supreme.
Now when I loose and smile they always laugh on me saying I’m pretending to be cool. Initially I didn’t care but now it doesn’t feel good. How to tell them that I am really unaffected by the outcome. They continuously keep pissing. In a match, whenever I do any mistake their comments come running to my mind and I loose focus and seem to be drifted to 3rd world. It is affecting my games now. I told them directly but they don’t believe.
How to tell them that I really don’t feel bad on loosing????????
