Need help learning how to play chess?

I have never played chess in my life. Can you possibly give a basic understanding, the rules, and how it all works?
It was so embarrassing when my little cousin asked me to play chess with him and I didn’t know how. Then my relatives found out and started laughing at me. They are so mean 
lol. They just wait, see what a great chess player I will be (hopefully).
Any tips and hints would really help. Thank you very much!

Chess is pretty easy to learn, but it takes a lifetime to master. I would imagine you could go to Yahoo Games online and learn the basic moves. The pawns move straight ahead but take diagonally. There are some other rules to pawns and how they move. Bishops move along their diagonals. You have a black bishop and a white bishop. Rooks move like the bishops, except they move vertically and horizontally, straight ahead or sideways, not on a diagonal. The Queen can move in any direction she pleases and is your most valuable piece. The King can also move in any direction he pleases, diagonal or vertical, but only one square at a time. The Knight, well, the Knight moves in a "L" shape, either two squares forward/backward and one to the side, or one square forward/backward and two to the side. Trying to explain these moves is much more complicated than somebody just showing the moves to you on a chessboard. The difficulty in chess is seeing what will be 3 moves ahead, or 4 moves ahead. I don’t see how anybody can teach you how to play chess by typing into this little box here, but as I said, it is easy enough to learn how the pieces move. A piece takes another piece if its move interesects the square the other piece is on. Pawns can move two squares ahead as their first move. Study en passant, a special technique in pawn capture. Also, a pawn can be promoted to any piece you want if the pawn makes it all the way across the board, much like checkers.
Good luck. Oh, and if Chess is not your cup of tea, learn how to play Go, a Japanese game far more complex yet easier to learn. You can teach a computer how to play chess and the computer will beat a chess master half the time, but you can’t teach a computer how to play Go and beat a good Go player. If you learn Go, you can always turn your nose up at Chess and say "Chess is for children, I play the ancient game of Go."

I can give u info on how the pieces move but thats about all. Im not very good.
Pawn- can move forward one space Exept on its first move it can move 2
It can "take" another piece Only by killing it diaganally
Castle- can move sideways and up and down however far u want
Bishop-(The pointy headed thing) can move diaganally however far it wants
Knight-(HOrsey) This is the most complicated piece in my opinion it moves in L shapes

Queen- can move Forward backward Right left
any amount it wants
King- if your king dies u lose
it can move 1 space diagonal right left up down
When your king is in danger it is called CHECK u have to move your king or another piece so that he is not in check
CHECKMATE is when basically U LOSE
your king is dead no matter where you move it.

You came to the right guy.Here are the rules:
You probaly know that each player takes the 2 back rows.Here is how you set up(It’s the same for each player but you put your queen on her color):
In the back row here is how you put your players left to right:
Rook,Knight,Bishop,King,Queen,Bishop,Knight,Rook.(The king and queen could be the other way around depending on your color)In front of the back row you put all your pawns there.
This is how your players move:
Rook-Can move only vertical or horziontal
Knight-Can only move in a L shape form and you are the only player who can jump
Bishop-Can only move diagonaly
King-Can move one space any direction
Queen-Can move like every player except the knight
Pawn-Can only move one space forward at a time except on your first turn you can move two ahead.You have to move diagonaly to attack.
The object of the game is to get the king.If any of your players so they can get the king you say "check".If you can get any of your players to get the king but they can’t get out then you say "checkmate".When you capture a player you take them off the board.If you can get a pawn to get all the way to the back row you can replace it as any other player.

Its always encouraging to get new players, especially females. Theres something exciting about a clever, devious woman putting you in all sorts of pins, pulling out forks and skewers, and ultimately having to submit to a wild mating combination.
And yes, I’m still talking about chess. Who says it just has to be for geeks?
The problem is that it can be explained poorly. Chess is abstract. It can be a war game. It can be an interactive art. It can be like a magic trick. I think its a grenade ballet. If you talk to the wrong person or read the wrong stuff, you’ll think its smut for the intreverted intellectuals among us.
If you are looking for the absolute basics, wikipedia has a quick rundown that isn’t too complicated. However, just because you know the rules doesn’t mean you’re ready to play.
If you are getting playing instruction of a cardboard box, throw it away. You’ll get crap. If you have somebody teaching you thats boring you, get away. Thats not a good way to be invited to a game that many can find complete fascination with.
For starting out, I highly reccommend ‘play winning chess’ by yasser sierwan. They have it at barnes and noble. It teaches the rules, a basic history, and good strategy. Its also a very easy and fun read. Read that and within a couple of months you’ll be able to go back to your cousin’s and you’ll probably be able to show them a thing or two!
Also, avoid books by fred reinfeld. he’s confusing.
For reading on women in chess, I would reccommend ‘chess bitch’ by Jennifer Shahade. She has a lot of pull in the US Chess community and offers a unique perspective.

chess rules are a little complex to just explain each piece does a different thing. my suggestion is get a learn to play chess book, or have a friend teach you.
Recinition:the tallest piece is the king, the second tallest is the queen,the third tallest is the bishop,the forth tallest is usually the knight but sometimes the rook is. and the shortest is always the pawn. How the move:Bishops go diagonal same amount as spaces as the castle aka rook,castles move horizantal and virtical as many spaces as it wants inless there’s a peice in the way that is his/hers,kings go one space in every direction,queens can go every direction as many spaces as it wants,Each individual pawn can go 2 spaces FORWARD on the firt turn that it is move or 1 space FORWARD but every turn after you move it it only moves 1space FORWARD.Knights aka horses are tricky to master how they move.They move can moce two horizantal and then 1 virticle or 2 virticle then 1 horantal.KNights are the only piece that can jump another piece. How they kill:A piece only can kill 1 piece each turnand can’t kill your own piece.All peices accept the pawn.pawns and knights are tricky to master.pawns kill diagonal and knights only kill the peice they land on.
Stalemate,check,and checkmate:Check is when your king is in danger.There are 3 ways to get out of check:Moving a piece in the way of the of the piece that is checking the king,moving your king out of danger and killing the piece that is checking the king.Checkmate is when theres no way to save the king and if you’r checkmated you lose.Stalemate is when you can’t move your king in any direction without being in danger but if you can make a move that wouldn’t checkmate you its not stalemate.Stalemate is a draw.
SPECIALS:
If a pawn gets to the other side of the board it can turn into any piece accept a king and a pawn.En passent is when a opponentmoves there pawn two and if its next to your pawn you can move you pawn in front of it and capture it.I dont know know how to explain casling tho.
How to set the board up:Castles go in the corners then knights go next to them. bishops go next to knights.Then in the middle the queen goes on the color square that it is and the king is next to it.Then all the pawns go in front!
TIPS:for a opening move move the knights to the thi inner feild never the sides well sometimes the sides but not for a opening move.
