Chess Opening: QGD Marshall Defense 4.Nf3
In this video, the second of a two-part series, we will examine the Marshall Defense in the Queen’s Gambit Declined. 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nf6 3.cxd5 Nxd5 and now the previous video saw 4.e4, which is the right idea but 4… Nf6 5.Nc3 e5! gives Black a decent game. The more approved move is 4.Nf3, controlling e5 and preparing e4. We will look at 4.Nf3 e6, 4.Nf3 Bg4, and 4.Nf3 Bf5. These lines all appear to lead to a White advantage. In summary, the Marshall Defense is not seen among strong players today because it allows White to take control of the center at very little cost.

great video.. and thanks a lot cuz i stopped playin the ruy lopez cuz of the marshall
Umm… the Marshall Attack in the Ruy is a totally different opening (named for the same guy though)
Thanks. I’ve just won a game, with the 4:10 trick
“words cannot describe how I feel about this continuation.” LMFAO
wow,it seems no hope for black!!
POST A MUGSHOT I WANT TO SEE YOUR FACE!!
1. Eww.
2. Caps.
3. Google.
Omg lol I readed your description at your YouTube Page and literally laughed hard when i read: “Openings seem to be the most political part of a chess game.”
Nice man keep it up
Ha ha ha Matt lol
Nice vid. I like the Queen’s gambit, and I once had someone play that on me. Also, I pushed my pawn once the knight took back, and he moved his knight, not back to F6, but to B6. From there, I just dominated the center and beat him handily. O btw, the title says QGD-Queen’s Gambit Declined. But in the vid, it isn’t declined… maybe u shud fix that…
Thx. I don’t really understand the ..Nb6 stuff, it seems to give White a pretty easy game as you said.
And no, it is no mistake, Black defended the pawn instead of playing 2..dxc4, so it is a Queen’s Gambit Declined (although not the traditional Queen’s Gambit Declined 2..e6)
this is my honest question to all….what can i do to improve my chess skills?
i guess you all can give me good answers..
oh yeah… that’s true… The position just reminded me of the accepted variation so much.
the combinations are really effective but people never play the exact moves lol.
Well, yeah, you do have to think for yourself when you play a game of chess, but the more tactical themes you’re exposed to and learn, the stronger you will be.
Plus, I actually do think this opening shows up a lot at beginner level. After 1.d4 d5 2.c4 on the internet, when my opponent takes longer than 10 seconds for the next move, that move is ALWAYS 2…Nf6.
No I think Matt is right that if your opponent gets into the Marshall Defence (which lets face it, wasnt one of Franks best ideas!) the moves he describes here for black are very common though in my experience 4Bg4 happens more than 4e6
Funny enough in a game I played at the York congress the other month, my opponent sort of tricked himself into playing the Marshall it went 1.d4, Nf6 2.c4, d5 I was like. Hmmm okay 3.cxd5
People have played 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 Nf6 against me in the past. After 3.cxd5 Nxd5 4.d4 we have the Marshall (4.e4!? is also possible there)
I would say to learn one or two strong openings for white and most of the variations as well as strong openings for black against 1.e4 and 1.d4 because you are going to see those two openings 85% of the time. Keep it simple. Work on your mating tactics and on your endgame. You should always have a plan and be dynamic. Try turning your board around so that if you are playing as white, you are on the side of the black pieces. It helps you see things from the view of your opponent.
my 2 cents
nice vid,thanks GreenCastle
Yes it’s true people does not exactly play the same moves but if you are aware of all the chess openings you have less time to think specially in the blitz game….in 2 to 15 moves if you commit a mistake you will be one piece down or will lose the game. as you play chess you will experience different kinds of variations of game the more games you play the more wittier you are…..Imagine when you first play chess you are one’s a victim of the four or to moves game or the foolsm mate.
i beat a friend with the queen and bishop line up.
Great videos.. Thanks for posting..
Whats yr elo rating @ Matt ? Very instructional video
)
at 4:25 when you take blacks pawn, what happens if black simply recaptures with his B7 pawn?
@MasterofWindandKoopa Bxc6+ and Black will lose the Queen and be down a piece
