All you’ll get is opinions. In my opinion it is as boring as a queen pawn opening unless black freaks out.
It is a matter of taste, but the Ruy is the favorite of some. In fact It is supposedly the only sound King Pawn opening, if you are a wussy and into safety and all…
No. It is a good opening because white has:
- developed a knight and a bishop.
- taken a strong presence in the centre
- made place for castling.
Black on the other hand has:
- a presence in the centre as well.
- developed a knight
- allowed development of a bishop.
Since there are hundreds or maybe thousands of books on chess openings I doubt there is a "best" opening.
The best opening is one you understand and are comfortable with. The object of the opening is to obtain a playable middle game position. No more, no less. A theoretically superior opening you don’t understand is a worse choice than a lesser but sound opening that you do understand. I remember when computer programs first came out and they were programmed with some book lines. As soon as they got out of book, they started rearranging the properly placed pieces to squares their programming said were superior. They didn’t understand the strategic concepts. Don’t imitate them.
