Just do a google search for "free chess online". The first 10 sites that appear all offer free online chess (as I’m sure the next 10 will also).

Chess itself is not patented.

I really don’t see how you could possibly state that there are no free chess websites. Yahoo! itself has free online chess. There are many, many other sites with free online chess. Too many to list.

Chess itself has been around for hundreds of years, so there is no patent or copyright on it. As long as you don’t just make a copy of somebody else’s site you should be fine. (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer.)

FICS is the Free Internet Chess Server — it is a server devoted to chess. As the name suggests it is free, it uses some specialized software (also free) but once you learn the interface(s); it becomes very easy. In my opinion FICS is the best chess experience on the net — It has lessons and tutorials — there are players of every strength.
