I wouldn’t recommend learning to play on pogo or yahoo, but you should use them to play games if there’s no one local to play with you. Although there are a lot of… unrefined players who’s bad habits you may start to pick up, one of the best ways to learn after you have the rules down is to play (and lose
games. As long as you’re also getting good info from sites like these, there’s nothing wrong with playing on yahoo or pogo, IMO.
Here are some sites that teach chess:
The links on chesscorner take you from how the pieces move to tactics, mates, and openings. Each link has pictures to help you along.

Chess.com has a tutorial but assumes you know how the pieces move and such, this tutorial is interactive and gives good explanations even about wrong moves and can be found here:

Neither of these really shows you endgames though, there’s a site, logical chess, that includes endgame information as well as covering the other parts of the game. It has a lot of good information if you’re willing to read it — it also has pictures and is found here:

There are certainly other sites out there, and if you’re internet savy enought to post a question here, I’m sure you’ll be able to find others
Well you can only "learn" chess so much. There are no magical formulas that only grandmasters know that makes them win so much. It’s just about practicing and learning to recognize patterns. This site does a good job of making sure you at least survive the opening (first 7 moves roughly): http://www.eudesign.com/chessops/ch-clear.htm
I’d also join the IECC…email chess club. It lets you compete with other people at your own skill and you can spend up to 3 days thinking per move.
try pogo.com they have loads of games on there including chess and you can play against robots for more practice. and there are hints etc for legal moves.
Well you should try to google it and use a bunch of different ones and see which one you feel "teaches" you better .
