I recommend the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS). You can play against all levels of opposition. They have free lectures every hour and you can have your games analyzed by higher rated players if you wish to improve your game. Abuse, rating manipulation and cheating are not tolerated.

Edit: I intentionally left out Yahoo Chess as it has so many problems with bugs, clock problems, cheaters, rating manipulators, proggers, etc. It is a free chess site, but I just cannot in all good conscious recommend it.

chessmaniac.com u will have to register its free and u play real people it is very fun you will get better i can guarantee they train you to learn about different defences openings and avoiding blunders
You can play on yahoo games since you already have a yahoo account. You can play against real ppl or the cpu
There are few ‘real people’ playing it’s just centaurs and smart asses running computer chess engines like rybka and fritz they pirated off of peer to peer sites.
There are clubs like the grizzly chess club that are clean but you have to get voted in by members to get accepted and they have strict rules:
