Favorite Opening Move on the Chess board?

Come on all you prodigies, let me hear your favorite moves.

How a computer chess program works ?

I have always wondered what kind of algorithms are employed on the computer chess program that can easily win the best players in the world.

Does it uses a database which have set of all possible combinations and the best step stored in it ? Nope it must not be like that because that program size will be extremely large in that case.

Or are there many rules in the game of chess that if followed we can always win. For example in Tic Tac Toe game, learning some tricks always makes you atleast tie with the opponent or even win if your opponents dont know those.

Chess is one of the most logical game in the world. What is the secret beyond it AI ? Across speed and accuracy what makes a chess program the best chess player ?

Question by KwanYin: Tried-and-true online chess playing software: Best bet for online chess play against others?
I’m an intermediate-level chess player new to the online gaming world. I want to be able to play chess online against other human beings. I *also* want to be able to play chess against my own computer. What software package(s) do you most highly recommend for being the “gold standard” for this sort of use? I’m looking for freeware as well as shareware. Thanks in advance!

What chess programs have algebraic interfaces?

Question by Jabberwocky: What chess programs have algebraic interfaces?
I am interested in a chess program (preferably freeware) that will allow me to use algebraic notation in order to select my moves and will only display the progress of the game in algebraic notation in order to follow the moves of the computer. This could be considered a form of “blindfolded chess” training, but I haven’t yet seen a helpful suggestion for that, except that you should use a program with an algebraic interface, never mind whether there are any particular ones in existence!

sjeng is a freeware chess engine that, when played from a terminal window in Linux, will allow you to enter moves in AN. And you can optionally suppress the board updates, to give you a “blindfold” experience.

The AN used by sjeng is not the usual one, though. You have to enter moves as e2e4 or g1f3, instead of the usual e4 or Nf3.

There are Windows executables available on the download page (the second link below), but I haven’t tested them. You’d probably want Sjeng1213.zip or Sjeng112.zip, the versions WITHOUT the interfaces. If you install a graphical interface, you’ll probably lose the ability to enter moves in AN, and suppress the board display. Without the graphical interfaces, you’ll have to run sjeng.exe from a DOS prompt.

EDITED TO ADD: Found another program that has a slightly friendlier text interface. It’s called Phalanx:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/phalanx/

Again, in Windows you need to run this from a DOS prompt to enter moves in AN. Phalanx allows you to use standard AN for move entry, so e4 or Nf3 will work.

Chess Openings- Smith Morra Gambit

The Smith Morra Gambit is a sharp and aggressive line for white against the very popular Sicilian Defense. Most players that play e4 run into the Sicilian and if they want to get out of book lines and take an aggressive approach the Smith Morra Gambit is a great way to go. www.thechesswebsite.com Chess Software used in the video can be found at http and www.chessok.com
