I’ve always been interested in the game of chess. I dad was going to teach me how to play but I was killed in Afghanistan 2 years ago. The only people I know who play chess now are my cousins but they live far away. It it seems I might have to teach myself. Can I teach myself how to p;ay chess and how?

Question by tough life: How can i defeat a computer chess engine?
i’m not a chess expert or GM. I’m just an ordinary yahoo chess player. I have chess genius software. I have played 3000 games with it on my computer since 2006 and i have lost all 3000. I can’t even get a draw out of it. I tried very hard but it never works. And i play with the weakest strength of chess genius which is “instant move”. Instant move mode is considered weakest because chess genius does not think and moves immediately. However, I still lose very badly. Are there any tricks or strategies that can help me defeat it? The best that I have done is lasted 72 moves before being checkmated.

i have good news for you & bad news…
the good news is you have patience (which is a good chess quality)
the bad news?….you have absolutely no idea how to play a game of chess !!
you don’t understand WHY certain things happen

Is there any variation of the sicilian defence that starts with e4 c5 nf3 e6?
and another question, is there any place i can read about the sicilian defense and all variations of it?
and what should i do if someone do e6 after e4 c5 nf3 (if there isn’t a variation that goes that way..)

Question by LV: what causes a computer to freeze?
I use a chess program to play chess on my computer, even before my game ends my computer freezes and I need to reboot to have it started. Why and what can I do to solve this problem?

It’s probably the program. It might be causing a conflict with your graphics card. Try updating your graphics card driver. Or try a different chess game.

Question by JT: Man vs computer lesson?
Say a game like chess is solved by a computer and at best an opponent can tie the computer. Now a person spends his whole life studying this solved game, only to tie the computer. Will you say he wasted his/her life?
For those who do not know, no human or computer in history has ever mastered the game, but computers will eventually solve the game. This scenerio is in the future when computers play the perfect chess game.

As long as the person studying to tie the computer is happy with his life, then I say his life is not wasted. If the person is unhappy, then it’s a wasted life.
