Opening knowledge allows one to obtain an equal or superior position.

Wouldn’t it be easier for a lower player to find a better move in a equal or slightly better position, than a very poor one created by himself, because the player didn’t know the opening?

I learned Queen’s gambit declined variations, and it helps me immensely, and i will continue to learn openings.–Now I know when someone strays from a Queen’s gambit declined opening, and I can tell where their knowledge begins, ends, or where they want to change something in the opening. AND to go hand in hand with that, i can also play Queen’s gambit declined myself, very well. Semi-slav, lasker variation, Petrosian, whatever i want. Rather than making possible severe opening mistakes that will impact the game at a later stage.
