can an real time strategy computer game make you smarter. Because chess is strategy and it playing it makes you smarter.

also if not can rts games make you a better chess player

No but they can make you think more strategically… if you play chess often enough a really hard computer than yes it can make you a really good chess player… i used to do that for practice and i won $ 100 for a chess tournament before… but i stopped…. bottum line… it wont make you smart… just more strategical… and playing chess on the comp may help you… but it depends on how hard the opponent is

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play chess…but I find the books a bit beyond me if you aren’t putting it into practice….the same with online tutorials where its just pages of reading. I think I could understand it if I had a board in front of me playing a game….but I live in a small town and everyone here plays backgammon or checkers….if they play board games at all….they all play computer games. I know the very basic rules…like the names of the pieces and their move ability and that white goes first and on your first move the pawn can move two squares. But Im not big on the check and check mate rules though. And I don’t know any strategies at all….I just move pieces willy nilly and hope they dont get taken. Obviously Im not looking to be any type of master….duh….just looking to play for fun….but to actually know what Im doing!

But as I mentioned..I live in a small town…actually on an island so Im stuck with the people who live here really…obviously Im not going to travel to the mainland just for a chess teacher….and there are absolutely no local chess clubs. Theres not even a mothers group! People here are into checkers or backgammon and thats just the older people….the younger people only ever play playstation or the like.

In my opinion the best way to learn and improve in chess is to buy a good chess book. Maybe the few books that you have read is for advance player, that is why you think they are beyond you. I would suggest you buy Play Winning Chess by Seirawan. That book will not only teaches chess you well, it will also introduce you to some colorful history of chess and its great players. Question by Mick: Why do people use “player’s guides” to play video games?
Are they really too stupid to figure out how to get through the game? What’s worse is those that use the guides to play a game online. It’s like playing chess with a computer when you wanted to play another person. Why buy a game and then pay somebody else to play it for you?

I use game guides only after I beat the game, to unlock every aspect of the game, which would be statistically improbable without a little help.

Without any wires or any wifi network (not necessarily internet) it impossible to connect to another computer. I assume you want to use chess titans to play against someone on a different computer. You need to set up some kind of connection or else it won’t work.

I am trying to find one that has the basic strategy board games like chess and go at least. I’m looking for the ones that you can play against the computer with no internet connection. The more games and the simpler the better, but I would be happy with anything that meets the above requirements.

I downloaded Arena and then Houdini. I’m using the two together. I want to analyse my games and find flaws in them but when I analyse my games using the Analyse button, the computer makes some calculations and then its over. I don’t see anything, I cannot view the analysis.

I am an ok chess player. this year my school started a chess club and had a tounament to find the best 10 chess players in the school and i won all of my games. My school is versing another school that is really good.
