Memorise popular opening sequences and responses. Go back over the last 15 or so years and look at all the World Championship games.

If she appears to know all the openers then try some really old ones – they all have flaws though. It’s the surprise element, if she’s that good, that may catch her out. I played a guy who was slapping me around every game, seemed to know all the openers and responses. I then tried something called The Steinitz Gambit (hasn’t been used in years) – shocked the hell out of him and I won the next few games. It’s now a 50/50 thing – he’s more wary of me and that’s half the battle….

Help with CHESS rules?

Question by Somedunce Kid: Help with CHESS rules?
I been playing chess on freegamesscout.com for years, this game i only against computer. I beat computer 100`s of times, but one odd thing is, when I corner the black king into black corner and check mate it, it tells me that it`s a PAT, not checkmate.This happens only in this situation. Not being expert at chess rules is this a true/valid chess rule? or is this game programed out of whack?-I have never heard of this rule-but I am not en expert at chess rules, any experts out there?
Maybe it would be clearer if I ask like this: Is there ANY situation on chess board when black king is checkmated, that he can claim a pat/draw?..
“Pat” is a DRAW….on this web you don`t any points for winning or draws, I just play for my own fun…
David-The black king I put the black king in checkmate-with my last move-he is in checkmate, but the computer says it`s a pat, not my win…Thanks for such good explanation. I am fully aware that opponents king must have at least one space free to move before I check mate him.I checkmated before with my Q & 2 B`s., with Q & K, with K &2 R`s. most difficult for me is to checkmate with my Q & 1 Knght.

I need help with a chess puzzle.?

Question by gamers71320: I need help with a chess puzzle.?
You have two white bishops on the d5 and e5 squares and a black queen on the f2 square. Place the white and black king on the board (without moving the bishops or queen) in legal positions (e.g. not in direct check) so that white can checkmate the black king in one turn. It is whites move.

I got this puzzle from a computer game so I know it is possible, I just can’t figure it out.

Thanks!

I came up with the same answer as the first (now deleted): BK on h8 and WK on f6. As The Instigator said, it’s check, but is legal. White moves Kg6, forcing back to block Qf6. Bxf6 then wins.

I’m thinking that legal position is a requirement of the puzzle, but that you have added “not in direct check” as a way to help understand the instruction, and in the process, closed of the thought process to get to the answer.

Answer by Math Help Guy
Distance of 1st bus: 40t
Distance of 2nd bus: 60(t – 1.5)

40t = 60(t – 1.5)

40t = 60t – 90

60t – 40t = 90

20t = 90

t = 90/20 = 4.5 hours

They will meet at 4:30. They will be 40(4.5) = 180 miles from Freetown.

Q&A: help with Binomial Random Variables?

Question by karebear: help with Binomial Random Variables?
A computer chess game and a human chess champion are evenly matched. They play 10 games. Find probabilities for the following events.

a) They each win five games.
b) The computer wins seven games.
c) The human chess champion wins at least seven games.

Best answer:

Answer by Charlotte
(a) First you need to find the number of outcomes of these games, which is 2^10. This is because for each of the ten games there are two possible outcomes. The number of outcomes of 5 wins for each is 10!/(5! 5!). The probability that they each win five games is therefore [10!/(5! 5!)] / 2^10.

(b) The probability of the computer winning seven games is the same probability of the person winning seven games. The number of outcomes for seven computer wins is 10!/(7! 3!). The probability of this happening is [10!/(7! 3!)] / 2^10.

(c) Human wins at least seven games = Number of possible outcomes minus human wins all games, wins 9 games, and wins 8 games. 2^10 – 1 – (10!/9! 1!) – (10!/8! 2!). Probability = [2^10 - 1 - (10!/9! 1!) - (10!/8! 2!)] / 2^10.

Hope this helps.
