Chess: c5 as opening move for black?

I have an acquaintance that is a pretty good chess player. He is not a Master, but I think he is called an Expert. Anyhow, against every first move for White he answers with Black the first move of c5. His opponents have opened 1) e4 1) d4 1) c4 1) f4 1) Nf3 1) Nc3 and I think even once an opponent of his opened 1) b4 but in every case he responds as black with c5. I asked him a bit about it, and he said something about Sicilian defense and Benoni Defense? I then asked him had he ever lost his c5 pawn and been down a pawn? He said in many openings the c5 pawn is a gambit pawn? Anyhow, I don’t know him very well, so haven’t gotten into great detail about it. But is anybody out there an authority on c5 openings for black, c5 as a gambit pawn, and why they seem to work for him no matter what his opponents play as White? He wins often also. I would be curious about books on it too. Thanks in advance.

How a computer chess program works ?

I have always wondered what kind of algorithms are employed on the computer chess program that can easily win the best players in the world.

Does it uses a database which have set of all possible combinations and the best step stored in it ? Nope it must not be like that because that program size will be extremely large in that case.

Or are there many rules in the game of chess that if followed we can always win. For example in Tic Tac Toe game, learning some tricks always makes you atleast tie with the opponent or even win if your opponents dont know those.

Chess is one of the most logical game in the world. What is the secret beyond it AI ? Across speed and accuracy what makes a chess program the best chess player ?

How do you play yourself in chess?

I want to be able to practice chess by playing blitz games in my mind (blind fold style) against myself. A problem arizes. It is probably not too difficult to learn how to play blindfold chess…but the question is, how do you play yourself in chess?
I have problems doing this. I guess this is partially due to my style of thinking (my move mentality usually goes like this…this move doesnt lose me anything, and, if my opponent doesnt see this nifty tactic, i win a piece). However, this doesnt work toward winning when you play yourself since you know all your tactics. Does anyone know of any resources, or maybe advice that you can give me to help me learn to play myself in chess.

So assume we were playing regular chess, but we only add a small variation: no castling; how would you open the game?
Opening the center means exposing your king, closing the center my give the king trouble as strong pieces of your opponent can give you a lot of trouble!
Without castling I would open on the flanks, and develop my rooks, early on the game (b4 or g4)

By the way, could you please indicate a notable game in which one player castles and the other does not yet ends up winning the game!

Hey, I have a question about online Chess?

Hi, I was playing this guy with my BabasChess Graphical Interface for FICS (free Internet Chess Server) and I don’t think I’m that bad a player, however, he was DESTROYING ME. I think he was using a computer against me or something because the moves looked like that of a computer. Very materialistic moves. Anyways, is there a way to find out whether your opponent is using a computer against you. I know he may have been really good but I just want to know if you can do that. Or is there no way to tell?

I just learned how to play chess. I’m kind of confused on whether or not this happens: I move my pawn up one square, and the opponent’s chess piece is diagonally to the right of my pawn. I know that I am allowed to capture the opponent’s piece, but do I take it’s place on the board, or do I stay where I am?
