Is there a best (or more efficient) chess opening, or is it just a matter of how you respond to the opponent’s opening? It doesn’t seem logical that there’s a best opening, but I thought I’d ask anyway, since I’m not such a skilled player.

Hey guys, there is this one opening that my friend and I have experimented with.
I’m not sure what this opening is called nor of which variation it is, this is why I need help.
The start is:
1. e4 d5
2. Nc3 d4
I usually play Black in this opening and found it semi-effective in creating a central attack on the opponent. What I need help is, what is this Opening called and what are some recommended moves that each side can take?
Thanks heaps

What unusual or surprise chess openings/variations should I prepare for an interschool chess tournament? I have already studied the main lines/variations of common openings (Ruy Lopez, Sicilian, King’s/Queen’s Indian, etc) so I’m not too worried about them. I want to adopt an opening that will surprise my opponent – assuming he/she likes to play by the book
Any advice is appreciated.
Here’s a game that surprises from the first move!

i have recently took up the hobby of playing chess and i was if i was to play the ruy lopez opening in chess which starts out as(your) e4 to(your opponent) e5, if you opponent decides that they want to play their knight first instead of their pawn, can you still play the ruy lopez opening or do you have to change your opening?
