Most to least important:

(When I say units I mean individual soldiers/ships/tanks etc.)

-Strategy should be the most important feature, followed by tactics.
-The potential for advanced strategies and tactics must be present. I’m not talking just pincer movement, I mean splitting into squads, setting up decoys, transfering individual soldiers between platoons, and (if each soldier/squad has seperate evolving AI, which would be AMAZING, or even just a randomly selected skill level scale) the ability to figure out who the best soldiers are and form elite groups, or promote them to commanders etc.
-AI
-Many units.
-Squads/Platoons/Brigade/Army
-No base building, or if there is then it should be seperate. The battles should have armies facing off against each other with, at most, a few reinforcements.
-Very basic graphics (I’m talking dots on a black screen basic. Obviously better graphics are OK, but more basic makes the potential individual units in a single battle much greater.)
-The ability to command the army at various levels {full army-one bridage-one platoon-one squad} (so you can either swap between levels of the army as you wish throughout the game or choose a level at the start of each battle/war/skirmish to command, while all other levels are operated by AI.)
-Different types of units (even just 3-4, as long as it isn’t a clear paper-scissors-rock situation. Every type of unit should be effective against every other type of unit if used well.)
-Simulation instead of a game with a plot and end-point. I want it to be more similar to a game of chess than most RTS games these days are.

Open source downloads are what I would prefer, but anything from a cheap purchase on steam, through online flash games, to a small scale project you know someone is working on would be great.

Also, obviously a game exactly as I described is incredilby unlikely, so anything close would be greatly appreciated.
I thought StarCraft would be mentioned :D . Awesome game, but I’m looking for something with actual AI, instead of being forced to control individual units. Also, SC is a 4X game, which I’m trying to avoid. I get the feeling though that I might have to make the game myself if I want something like it…

SPOILER ALERT FOR ENDERS GAME
However, after reading Enders Game a couple of years back, I loved the idea of the wargames he played while training, especially the one that turned out to be actually giving orders to ships on the far side of the galaxy.
//END SPOILER ALERT

And yeah, I thought a game similar to that may have been made sometime. Without the sending people to certain death, of course.

My son is autistic and loves to play chess. His skill level is a high beginner to low intermediate. We live in a very rural area and there’s no one for him to actually play with that doesn’t beat him every time. And so far we haven’t found a computer game that also doesn’t beat him every time. He may be autistic, but like anybody else, he likes to win. Thanks for any advise!
Thanks Karl, this helps a great deal! My son’s computer is several year’s old and runs Windows XP Home. Will look for Grandmaster Chess. Are you talking about on-line gaming to find someone that would play chess games with him? If so, I don’t know how to do this, but will try to find out. Thanks again!
Oh, and if you’re talking about people to actually play chess with him, it’s very very limited for him to find someone that will take the time to play him outside of our family, and my son knows when someone (like his dad) looses intentionally.
